A beautiful ghost story about a ghost wife who waits for husband even after death of a childbirth.
The legend tell the story of a pregnant woman by the name of Nak. She was deeply in love with her husband, Mak even after death.
Nak is heavily pregnant when Mak was conscripted and was send to fight a war. During the war he was seriously wounded and was nursed back to health in a local monastery. while he was nursing back to health, Nak was having a difficult birth and ended both her child and her died.
After sometimes, Mak returned and found both his wife and child waiting for him. After a while, rumours have been spreading that he had been living with the ghost of his wife and child. People who tried to warn him and prevent him to be together with his family was killed off by Nak.
One day, Nak was preparing nam phrik (some kind of Thai hot sauce) when she accidentally dropped a lime off the porch. In her haste to retrieved it she stretch her arm to pick it up from the ground below. unaware that her husband was beneath it. Upon seeing it, he was so scared and terrified by the fact that his wife and child was indeed ghost. He tried to his home without alarming her.
That night, Mak said he is going to relieved himself by going downstairs and he fled for the night. In the meantime, Nak who discovered her husband have fled. She chased after him, he then concealed him in the Sambong bush (A herbal plant in Asia) and according to folklore, ghost is afraid of the sambong leaves. Mak then run to the Wat Mahabut temple where ghost cannot enter due to it is a holy ground.
In her grief, Nak starts terrorizing people of Phra Khanong. She was furious of them as she think it is their fault causing Mak to leave her and the baby. You know what they said, hell hath no fury than a woman scorned.
Soon after the incident, the remaining people called for a high priest/ powerful exorcist to exorcise Nak's spirit. She was eventually captured by the priest and was confided in an earthen jar. He then threw it into the canal.
There are two version on the rest of the story. In one of the story, an old couple who was new moved to Phra Khanong found the jar while fishing. The other part are two fishermen dredged up the jar. Nak's spirit was freed when they opened the jar.
Nak goes to find the high priest/exorcist who confined her in the jar and killed him in the process. She was some powerful that the great venerable monk (Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi) have to capture her and confined her ones again. The learned monk confined her spirit in the bone from her forehead and binded it in his waistband.
It is said that the waistband is in current possession to the royal family in Thailand. Admiral Aphakonkiattiwong (The prince of Chumphon) claimed to have the relic..
There is alternate version of the story. The monk assured Nak that in her future life, she will be reunited with her beloved husband and thus she volunteered to depart for her afterlife. I like this version better.
THE SHRINE OF MAE NAK
There is a shrine/temple dedicated to Mae Nak at the Wat Maha But.

When making offering to her:
There is a statue of Mae Nak and her child at the center of the shrine. Devotees can make offerings and requests for help usually by women seeking for easy childbirth and that their husbanf to be exempted from the army. There are usually lengths of coloured cloths, wrapped around the bodhi tree. Offerings are usually fruits, lotus and incense sticks which are left a difference locations.
People usually being toys for her child and portraits of her are displayed in the inner sanctum of the shrine. A collection of find dresses are offered to her and are displayed behind her statue.
People usually placed offering at the edge of Phra Khanong Canal. Live fishes (usually bought by a bucket) can be purchased at the wet markets, this is for freeing proposes, Asian believe that by doing so will gain good karma for the afterlife and reincarnation. Stalls near the shrine alo sell toys, fish, lotus buds and garlands for those who wish to make wishes and offerings.
The story of Mae Nak was transformed into movies, television series and printed media.

Suicide Club, Suicide Circle (自殺サークル Jisatsu Sākuru)
A story about a mass suicide of 54 girls and it is a J-horror film back in 2001.
In Tokyo on May 27, a group of 54 teenage schoolgirls committed mass suicide by throwing themselves in front of an oncoming train. Shortly after the incident, located at a hospital, two nurses committed suicide by jumping out the window. At both locations, rolls of flesh were found and the missing skin matches the bodies found on both locations.
This resulted the engagement of three detectives (Kuroda, Shibusawa and Murata), they were notified by a hacker by the name Kiyoko of the link between the suicides and a webpage that shows the number of suicides as red and white circles.
A day after on May 28 in a high school, a group of students jumped off the roof during their lunch break, sending the city and the detectives in search of the suicide club. Soon after on May 29, the suicide boom had spread all over Japan.
Mitsuko was on her way home, when she was hit by her boyfriend, Masa. Due to wherever reason, he threw himself off a roof and this results to Mitsuko being taken to the police station for questioning. During a strip-search at the station, Mitsuko was discovered to have a butterfly tattoo.
On May 30, the police received a call from a boy who warns that on that evening at 7:30, another mass suicide will take place at the same platform. The detectives organize a stake-out in order to prevent the event, but there is no suicide. Meanwhile, individual and smaller-scale group suicides continue all over Japan, claiming many lives, including Kuroda's entire family. Kuroda receives a call from the boy who warned them about the second suicide wave, and upon the conversation's conclusion Kuroda shoots himself.
Meanwhile, Kiyoko is caught by a group led by a costumed man named Genesis whose hideout is a small subterranean bowling alley, where he resides with four glam-rock cohorts. During her capture, Genesis performs a song while a girl in a white sack is brutally raped and killed by one of the henchmen right in front of them. At Genesis' lair, Kiyoko e-mails the authorities information about her whereabouts. The police arrest him, and it is assumed the "Suicide Club" is caught.
On June 1, Mitsuko goes to her boyfriend's home to return his helmet, where she notices the Dessart posters on the wall and recognizes a pattern which corresponds to the letters on a telephone keypad and spells the word "suicide". Soon, the boy from earlier calls her to tell her there is no "Suicide Club" and to invite her to a secret concert.
On June 2, Mitsuko sneaks into the backstage area, where she wanders onto a stage. She sees a group of children in the audience, who ask her a series of questions. Mitsuko impresses the children, so they take her to a room where a strip from her skin is shaved off, where the butterfly tattoo is.
A new roll of skin ends up with the police, and detective Shibusawa recognizes the strip from Mitsuko's tattoo. That evening he sees Mitsuko as she is standing at the train station and grabs her hand but she pulls away. She stares at Shibusawa as the train pulls into the station and once she boards the train. As the train pulls out of the station the ending credits segment begins, in which Dessart announce their group's disbandment and offer appreciation toward their fan's loyal support before proceeding to perform their final song.
Reincarnation (輪廻 Rinne)
Reincarnation is referring to another lifetime after death when rebirth. It is an Asian believes that what you reap is what you sow, there are many stages in life after death.
Fast forward 35 years later, A horror movie director, Mr. Ikuo Matumura decided to make the film about the massacre. As the date for the movie draws near, an actress (Ms. Nagisa Sugiura) is set to star as Omori's daughter (Chisato), Soon she is haunted by the ghost of the victims in the massacre and began to hallucinated and have nightmares about the killings.
A student, Yayoi Kinoshita woke up in the middle of a psychology class in which the professor was publicly opposing the ideas of reincarnation. So she decided to write an essay in support of the theory and met up with Ms. Yuka Morita who happen to be an actress in Ikuo's movie about reincarnation. Yuka had remember some information from her past life and showed Yayoi her birthmark which was arround her neck and stated that she was strangled in her past life. Both Ms. Yuka and Ms Nagisa had the same vision about their past life.
Yuka and Yayoi arrived at the college library but due to unseen/ mysterious forces, Yuka was drag away. Meanwhile, Nagisa begins to believe that she is the reincarnation of Chisato Omori (The dead daughter of the killer). However, during another hallucination, she discovers Yayoi in the cubby where the little girl was slain. Realizing that she is not the real reincarnation of Chisato, Nagisa witnesses the actors (who are appearing as their reincarnations, which they are to portray) being drawn back to the places where they died. With all the victims walking towards her, Nagisa becomes aware of the truth: she is the reincarnation of the homicidal professor. Pursued by the ghosts, Nagisa is forced to reenact the professor's suicide, but survives.
Sometime later, in a mental ward, Nagisa - bound in a full-body wrap - is still haunted by the souls of Omori's children. Ayumi Omori, the professor's wife, gives Nagisa her children's favourite toys (which is a ball and a doll). Nagisa screams as they are shoved into her solitary confinement cell, but calms down with a sinister smile on her face as the ghosts of the children close in on her.
My view on this show is that is not really scary but still a little nice film to watch.
